Prepare for Winter Weather

All News

With a winter storm in the forecast, San Patricio Electric Cooperative crews are preparing to respond to any outages caused by the incoming winter weather.

High Winds Expected, Ice Possible

High winds are expected through the weekend. Please make sure you bring in or secure outdoor items that could be picked up in the wind, including trampolines.

There is a chance of some ice along with this winter storm, particularly in the northern part of our service area. Ice buildup on power lines can cause power outages. Crews are prepared to respond as quickly and safely as possible. However, keep in mind that icy road conditions could affect how quickly they are able to access certain areas of our system, and could lengthen outage times.

Stay away from down power lines. If you notice a down power line, consider it to be live and dangerous. Report down lines to 361-364-2220 or toll free at 1-888-740-2220.

ERCOT Grid Conditions

ERCOT expects grid conditions will remain normal throughout the winter storm. While ERCOT is not expecting to call for load shedding, we’d be remiss if we didn’t take this opportunity to remind you of what it is and how it could affect you. Please take a minute to review this insert from our October bills that further explains it: https://www.sanpatricioelectric.org/sites/default/files/PDF%20Documents/Bill%20Inserts/Load%20Shedding%20Bill%20Insert.pdf

Energy Saving Tips

Cold weather can lead to high electric bills and increase demand on the electric grid. Here are a few tips to help ease the strain on your wallet and the grid.

- Set your thermostat at 68 degrees or lower. Use extra layers or blankets for added warmth.
- Avoid using large appliances, such as your oven, washer or dryer.
- Turn off or unplug unnecessary lights and electronics.

Critical Care Members

If you rely on electrically-powered medical equipment, you need to make a backup plan in the event of a power outage. We cannot guarantee an uninterrupted, regular or continues flow of power. Here are a few tips to help you prepare:

  • Purchase an uninterruptable power supply, or battery backup, that can provide emergency power for a period of time.

  • Invest in a portable or whole-home generator that can power life-saving equipment in the event of an extended power outage.

  • Plug electronic devices into surge protectors, which will protect your equipment from potential damage during a power outage.

  • Always keep an adequate supply of prescription drugs and medical equipment on hand in case a storm prevents you from getting refills.

  • Report outages immediately by calling us at 361-364-2220 or toll-free at 888-740-2220.

  • Let SPEC know if there’s someone in your home that relies on life-supporting medical equipment by filling out the form on our website: www.sanpatricioelectric.org/critical-care-critical-load
