These days there’s not a whole lot you can buy with a dollar. You might be able to pay for a candy bar or a small cup of coffee, but you won’t be able to stretch your money very far. However, invested wisely, that same dollar could be used to save your life.
As a SPEC member you may be eligible for a discounted rate with HALO-Flight, a non-profit air ambulance service. HALO-Flight transports patients with emergency medical needs to the appropriate hospital by helicopter. This service can be especially life-saving for people who live in rural areas and far from medical services.
SPEC members may enroll in the Guardian Subscription Plan for just $12 per year. The co-op has a special billing arrangement with HALO-Flight and can add the cost of service to your monthly electric bill, so you pay just $1 per month for the potentially life-saving service.
As a member, your $1 fee goes a long way. If you ever need to be transported by air due to medical necessity, HALO-Flight will transport you at no additional cost. These flights typically cost about $15,000 and the expense only rises the further you need to travel. However, as a HALO-Flight member, you never have to pay more than your monthly membership fee.
If you have insurance, HALO-Flight will bill it to recuperate any of the costs it may cover for your transport. Any payment it receives from your insurance company is considered payment in full. Even if you don’t have insurance you won’t be billed for HALO-Flight services as a member.
Your coverage also extends to family members that live in your primary residence. To qualify, these members simply need to be listed on your HALO-Flight membership application.
HALO-Flight serves 26 counties, or approximately 28,000 miles of South Texas. You and your listed dependents are covered any time you are in this service area. However, the organization also has reciprocal partners, San Antonio AirLIFE and Dallas CareFlite, which will provide service to you if needed. Please note, you are subject to the terms of agreement from these reciprocal partners if they need to transport you.
While membership with the organization is available to those in SPEC’s service area, you can’t be a HALO-Flight member if you are on Medicaid. State regulations prohibit it. Nevertheless, HALO-Flight will still transport a Medicaid recipient with a medical necessity at no cost.
If you’re interested in becoming a HALO-Flight member at SPEC’s discounted rate, please fill out our referral form and return it to our office at PO Drawer 400, Sinton, Texas 78387.
The special rate and billing arrangement is available for residential SPEC members only. Should you discontinue your electric service with SPEC, your HALO-Flight membership will automatically terminate 30 days after your account has been final billed. If you choose to terminate your HALO-Flight membership at any other time, you need to contact HALO-Flight directly at 361-265-0509.
