SPEC to Award $100,000 in Scholarships

San Patricio Electric Cooperative plans to award 20 scholarships, worth $5,000 each, to the class of 2016. Of these, 15 academic scholarships will be awarded to students planning to pursue a degree at a college or university. An additional five scholarships will be awarded to students who will attend a vocational or technical institute.

Each scholarship will be paid over a two-year period. Recipients will receive $1,250 per semester for four semesters, so long as they successfully complete at least 12 hours per semester and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

The co-op will assemble an independent scholarship committee to review and rate each scholarship application. It will award the 20 scholarships to students based on financial need, academic achievement, community involvement and leadership abilities.

SPEC will accept applications through April 1.

Eligibility requirements

  • You must be a senior graduating from a high school or a nontraditional secondary education (such as homeschooling) located within one of the nine counties served by SPEC.
  • Your parent/guardian must be a member and receive electric service from SPEC at their primary place of residence.
  • You must be of good character, as evidenced by at least three letters of reference from the high school you are currently attending. (Or homeschool equivalent.)

  • Complete an application
  • Send us three letters of recommendation from school faculty, or homeschool equivalent
  • Provide us with an official transcript from your school
