SPEC to Award $50,000 in Scholarships

All News

San Patricio Electric Cooperative will award 10 scholarships, worth $5,000 each, to graduating high school seniors in the co-op’s service territory this year. The scholarships are exclusively available to students whose parents or legal guardians are SPEC members and receive electric service from the cooperative at the student’s primary address.

An independent scholarship committee will consider each scholarship application and award 10 scholarships to students based on financial need, academic achievement, community involvement and leadership abilities.

Each scholarship awarded will be paid over a two-year period. Recipients will receive $1,250 per semester for their first four semesters, so long as they meet the conditions established for the scholarship program. Recipients are required to successfully complete at least 12 hours per semester and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

Since 1999, San Patricio Electric Education Trust has awarded nearly $1.2 million in scholarships to area students as part of our commitment to the communities we serve.

How is SPEC’s Scholarship Funded?

The success of our scholarship program is dependent on the generous donations of our members. Typical contributions come from retired capital credit checks. Some members choose to allocate their credits to the fund each year, while others donate them after estate settlements.

If you would like to donate your capital credits to the scholarship program, please give us a call at 361-364-2220.  Your donations help ensure the San Patricio Electric Education Trust will have the funds necessary to continue awarding scholarships for years to come. Thank you for taking an interest in our youth!

Our scholarship program is also funded, in part, by unclaimed capital credits. Each year, we make every reasonable effort to locate former members who are owed capital credits. When those members cannot be located, we escheat that money to the state. Then, the state returns a portion of those escheated funds to the San Patricio Electric Education Trust to be used for our scholarship program.
