San Patricio Electric Cooperative has an obligation to provide our members with safe and reliable electric service, and we work to honor that commitment in a variety of ways. One example of this is our tree-trimming program.
Trimming trees near power lines is something that should be left to the professionals, as it could be very dangerous. If you notice a tree branch that you think might be getting too close to a line, call SPEC to report it immediately.
If you’re not sure whether a tree is too close to a power line, SPEC encourages you to exercise caution and call us so we can assess the situation and ensure the area is safe for you and your family.
Even branches that appear to be clear from the line can be blown several feet during a storm. To ensure these branches won’t make contact with the power line, we prefer to have at least 10 feet of clearance on either side of the line and 12 feet of clearance above and below it.
We understand that you may value trees on your property and don’t want them cut or trimmed. However, trimming is often necessary to protect you, your loved ones and your property.
Trees growing in power lines can become energized and dangerous, which could cause the tree or area around it to catch fire. If you were to come into contact with a tree in our line—by touching, climbing or trimming it—it could be very hazardous.
Tree trimming is a key component of SPEC’s everyday effort to maintain our power lines. It’s this maintenance that helps prevent outages, saves money and helps keep our employees safe.
Trees and brush in a power line right-of-way can inhibit or block access for power company personnel, which can drive up the cost of power. Overgrown trees also present a safety hazard for SPEC employees because it limits how the employee can climb the pole. Trees next to poles could also cause significant injury to a lineman should he fall.
SPEC contracts a tree trimming service to help prevent tree overgrowth near power lines, but we also rely on you to report any issues you see. You play a key role in the safety of your fellow members and co-op employees. If you happen to see a tree that needs attention, please call us at 361-364-2220 or 1-888-740-2220.
